Sunday afternoon 2/21 we will meet in John’s session room to begin work on JSD Technology Curriculum review!!

Next JSD Technology Committee Meeting Wednesday, FEBRUARY 10, 2010:

Feb 17th John will be out of town, so moving meeting up to Feb. 10th next meeting—4:00 Agenda will include ASTE Conference sessions members will attend. Spread out over different sessions and share information with all members at March meeting.

PLATO has been purchased district-wide! All JSD staff can now log in and use this program with students. Contact John if you would like him to set up log in and password for you.

AELP
John is purchasing Apple (AELP) which updates all district computers to their limit.
ILife 09 and the Operating System (Snow Leapard)
$7,000 for this year (we had a credit--) Renewal is $50,000 for each year after.
Computer Tech’s at each site will look at the computers and decide what they can handle.

Email Outage
Phil says outside email problem has been solved (2 days work). Emails will sit in senders cache until it is sent forward or bounces back where the sender has the option of resending. Noon today most emails came through. Working with GCI to debrief what happened and try to make sure this won't happen again.

District Tech Coordinator Position
District Cabinet has the Tech Coordinator position on the agenda. John will keep asking.
Also it was noted that the IT budget for this year was minus $35,000. It is assumed that this $35,000 slated by the JSD board for integrating technology is where the IT funds went.

Budget FY 2011
Barbara Mechum suggested that we figure out the best date to attend JSD budget committee meetings to advocate that technology plan approval (tech coordinator and infrastructure updating) should be moved forward.
Budget Committee meets at JDHS (either the library or room 206) at 6:00 PM.
DATES: 1/20/10; 1/27/10; 2/3/10; 2/16/10; 2/23/10.

Technology Curriculum Review Process (call for a work group)
John, Wahl, Sheryl Wittig, Barb Kreher, Ray Imel Will meet at other times to begin the work on technology curriculum, hopefully using ATLAS software. Homework for those on this committee is to find examples of current school district technology curriculum.

Technology Purchasing Process (Draft)
Anything being ordered other than from the approved standards list--- which would be a "special request" the purchaser will follow these procedures. (Draft attached here) Review draft, suggest additions and John will take the final draft to the Administrative Council.

Vision planning for Technology Integration in the Juneau School District
Three years from now what do we want students to know and how to do using technology--- based on what we know today? Thoughts: adequate band width, a computer for everyone, INFUSED TECHNOLOGY 2012. Money, staff development, an additional $8,000 a month for internet access. We get discouraged---passion will be developed as staff development is ongoing, imbedded in every day teaching, and is infused staff development. The superintendent is asking for input as he is developing a vision for our district and this committee needs to let him know our thoughts. Connecting the ISTE student, teacher and administrator standards with our JSD standards will be a great start. All our separate efforts are working toward the same direction and we need to CONNECT them together.

Burning Issues
Proposal: Instead of hiring a JSD Technology Coordinator for half of this year, we would like John Wahl to ask that the $75,000 be put into technology budget and that he would continue to perform many of the tech coordinator tasks. John will let us know what is decided.

• Help with Technology-based initiatives: Atomic Learning, Teachscap e, Nettrekker, MAP, other...
Who's interested in starting a Content Filtering Ad Hoc Committee?

Minutes:
10/21/09

Present: John Wahl, Adam Berkey, Barb Kreher, Richard Steele, Jane Ginter, Sheryl Wittig, Susan Nachtigal, Pamela Hansjon, Chris Carte, Phil Gouveia

  • Approval of Minutes from Previous Meeting
Minutes for September 16, 2009 meeting were approved.

  • Reflection on Math/Science Conference and acknowledgements
All agreed the conference sessions were informative and went well. The behind the scenes crew of John Wahl, Barbara Kelly-Page and Barb Kreher successfully supplied needed equipment for the sessions.

  • Principals can schedule Technology Specialist (John Wahl) to assist with orientating staff to NetTrekker, Teachscape, and Atomic Learning. JSD Tech Committee Members should also become familiar with these tools.
John has been to several schools already and is scheduled for staff meetings at others, too. John showed the committee NetTrekker and gave each member their school log in number. Tech committee members are encouraged to create an account and show other staff at their school how to do this, too. John is refining staff account information for Atomic Learning.

  • Committee Work: Technology Curriculum Review Process
Next year, 2010, it will be time again to create a new JSD Technology Plan that will be submitted to the State of Alaska. While we begin thinking about this, we can start with working on JSD Technology curriculum this year. Discussion about using "Curriculum Mapping with ATLAS" took place. It was decided that John Wahl will look into availability of this program for use by an ad hoc committee to create JSD K-12 Technology Curriculum during meetings scheduled other than this Tech Committee meeting.

*Promethean Demonstration at UAS
The vendor will present a demonstration of Promethean boards. This is another brand of interactive whiteboards. Alan Degner has one and you can ask him his opinion of the product if you would like.
Friday, October 8:00 – 11:00 4:15-6:15
EGAN LIBRARY Classroom

  • Other items
1. John will ask David Means about plans for advertising and hiring a person for the District Tech Coordinator position that will begin in January 2010.

2. Since the district web site was updated, admin assistants at buildings have not been able to use "Contribute". The new district web site is a Content Management System and Mark Carver will eventually change school websites to CMS, also. For access to make web site updates the admin assistants should contact Mark.

3. There are 6 carts of MAPS testing laptops that can be checked out by schools throughout the district for MAPS testing. Some who have used these laptops say that the wireless connection tend to make the application slow. MAPS is currently the only software loaded on these laptops. Other software that we have licensing for could also be loaded on these machines so they could possibly be used for other applications.

4. NEW Apple computers promo from APPLE; $50,000.00 can upgrade all computers that qualify. John will look into it and see how to make this happen. We have 44,000 points.

5. Closer on getting Channel 6 TV at JDHS. Studio furniture has been built and getting ready. Phil will work on how to make connection from this studio in Richard Steele's classroom area to the communications room above it.

6. How can we get more than one channel at TMHS? It may be that the school will have to rent a cable box for each classroom. Currently at JDHS cable boxes are given free in exchange for no other donations from GCI. John suggested that this TV issue be brought up to TMHS Technology Committee.

4:30-5:00

Staff Development for Committee Members
Atomic Learning
• Teachers take an assessment of their technology knowledge. This program can generate reports the results of the assessments which can give each teacher modules to learn from. Also, the assessment reports could give information about which technology elements to focus on during "summer technology bootcamps".
• Modules are based on ITSE Standards
• After John gets staff info into database, Tech Committee members can help teachers access assessments

Nettrekker
 Follow Off the Wahl email directions to create an account

Proposal for Future Agenda Items

5:00 – 5:30
AD HOC Meeting:
Standards Committee
Begin Draft of Technology Purchasing Protocol
Begin adding Digital Projectors and Document Cameras to Standard list

Members went over the previous list of computers and printers that Phil Gouveia created last year. It was noted which items could be updated and John Wahl agreed to work on that. The group began discussion of what the process should be for technology purchasing. A draft will be created by next meeting. An informal discussion was started related to projectors and document cameras, but nothing was finalized. The group discussed the type of brands already in the Juneau School District.

Minutes:
Sept 16, 2009

John Wahl called the meeting to order:

Present:

Sheryl Wittig, AB Tech

Chris Carte, TMHS

Rich Culver, Dryden Tech

Richard Steele, JDHS

Barbara Kelly-Page, JDHS

Nancy Barto, Finance

Adam Berkey, MRCS

Barbara Kreher, JDHS Librarian

Mark Carver, District Tech

Leslie Antolick, TMHS Tech

Tom Milliron, FDMS

David Means, Finance

Membership: every building should be involved in this committee; offices are welcomed as their needs allow. Meetings will continue to be on the 3rd Wednesday of every month.

Meeting times 4-5:30;

4:00-4:30 general business

4:30-5:00 staff development needs; if needed

5:00-5:30 ad hoc committees as needed.

MAP Assessments

Leslie is working on the set-ups for TMHS student testing. She is working with the support staff and will get back to us. She is working on getting the audio files to open on the Macs.

NetTrekker Web Site (Google for Schools)

New registration process needs require you to register your school with the new registration number. Remember that everyone defaults as a student and then teachers go to preferences and register as a teacher. See allstaff email from John and individual school emails. The message is incorporated in one of John’s “off the Wahl” email.

Tom recommended that each building tech go to every team meeting and introduce the site to every teacher in the building. About 20 minutes was allowed to register and show each teacher group. Students can also go in and use the site. One class can also create a username and file folder for sites found and ready for use.

Nancy Barto questioned how the district tech/computer related purchase requests so EVERY order has the approval of IT before purchase. CIP is exempt from this process. To streamline this process, the ad hoc committee should come up with some standards for this process. The committee should draft a letter to all staff that requires site-based hardware and software purchases through the IT department. Tom recommends that he’d rather see it go through each building tech and principal so the building admin knows what is being ordered. He’d like the recommendation to go to the Admin Council for confirmation.

JSD New Web Site

Mark explained that the ~ teacher site folders did not get transferred to the new server. He is working on case by case issues and is getting to them as time allows. There were unforeseen issues that he did not know would be problems, let Mark know if you need more access to your ~ folders.

Staff member login to the site allows members to that portion of the site. If you have any ideas for developing portions of the site, please let Mark know. Discussion groups and forums could help cut down on all-school emails that aren’t really appropriate.

Atomic Learning Site

Is being purchased again; once the money is approved, for a three-year partnership for technology based learning. Lots of info on 21^st Century Skills, including a teacher technology assessment. There may be staff development credit available if we can bundle training packages in the future. There is also training available for students and parents.

Teachscape

New teacher support, math, literacy, ESL, and instructional series components among others are on the horizon. The whole library will be accessible to teachers.

JSD Net/Photo permission form

Leslie asked if the committee could look at the form and see about streamlining the six pages. She is wondering if it is within the authority of our committee to make recommendations for changes. David said he would take a copy of that to the proper level of authority and see what can be done.

Classroom/Teacher web sites:

John found in board policy that there is policy restricting student/teacher publication of web sites. Third party server sites are questionable and the committee might want to look at making a recommendation for editing.

John is going to send out an “OfftheWahl Technology Tip of the Week” instructing teachers that they can create their own web sites and publish in their tilde spaces.

Another issue is that we are hearing of teachers who are using their personal email accounts to conduct school district business. That may be a violation of board policy. John will check on that and send an email to principals to notify their staff of the issue.

Television:

Channel 6 for JSD teachers can publish student shows on TV. Richard is getting things going at JDHS to start televising shows. He is looking for equipment to get that going and is working within the community to get things. He’ll keep us updated on his progress with getting the video toaster up and running.

Mark added that he hopes to get the channel 6 shows on the web site. KATH is also willing to broadcast shows involving Southeast issues of interest.

Ad Hoc

Let John know which committees you are interested in working with.

Next meeting: October 21, 2009 (the third Wednesday of the month)

Meeting adjourned.
